Evidence for a Highly Dynamic West Antarctic Ice Sheet During the Pliocene

چکیده
Major ice loss in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is hypothesized to have triggered sheet collapses during past warm periods such as those Pliocene. International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 379 recovered continuous late Miocene Holocene sediments from a sediment drift on continental rise, allowing assessment sedimentation processes response climate cycles and trends since Miocene. Via seismic correlation shelf, we interpret massive prograding sequences that extended outer shelf by 80 km Pliocene through frequent advances grounded ice. Buried grounding zone wedges indicate prolonged ice-sheet retreat, or even collapse, an mid-Pliocene period ∼4.2–3.2 Ma inferred records. These results WAIS was highly dynamic major retreat events may occurred along margin.

West Antarctic Ice Sheet Initiative
The ocean's influence upon and response to Antarctic ice sheet changes is considered in relation to sea level rise over recent and future decades. Assuming present-day ice fronts are in approximate equilibrium, a preliminary budget for the ice sheet is estimated from accumulation vs. iceberg calving and the basal melting that occurs beneath floating ice shelves. Iceberg calving is derived from ...
متن کاملBacteria beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet.
Subglacial environments, particularly those that lie beneath polar ice sheets, are beginning to be recognized as an important part of Earth's biosphere. However, except for indirect indications of microbial assemblages in subglacial Lake Vostok, Antarctica, no sub-ice sheet environments have been shown to support microbial ecosystems. Here we report 16S rRNA gene and isolate diversity in sedime...
متن کاملWindblown Pliocene diatoms and East Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat
Marine diatoms in tillites along the Transantarctic Mountains (TAMs) have been used to suggest a diminished East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) during Pliocene warm periods. Updated ice-sheet modelling shows significant Pliocene EAIS retreat, creating marine embayments into the Wilkes and Aurora basins that were conducive to high diatom productivity and rapid accumulation of diatomaceous sediments....
متن کاملDynamic Antarctic ice sheet during the early to mid-Miocene.
Geological data indicate that there were major variations in Antarctic ice sheet volume and extent during the early to mid-Miocene. Simulating such large-scale changes is problematic because of a strong hysteresis effect, which results in stability once the ice sheets have reached continental size. A relatively narrow range of atmospheric CO2 concentrations indicated by proxy records exacerbate...
متن کاملExposure age and ice-sheet model constraints on Pliocene East Antarctic ice sheet dynamics
The Late Pliocene epoch is a potential analogue for future climate in a warming world. Here we reconstruct Plio-Pleistocene East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) variability using cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages and model simulations to better understand ice sheet behaviour under such warm conditions. New and previously published exposure ages indicate interior-thickening during the Pliocene. An ice...
